At Cognoscenti we are especially interested in the political and cultural history of the Overseas (and Overland) Chinese, from the Golden Triangle to San Francisco’s Chinatown and all points between.

But the enviably and eminently successful ’Huajiao’ Chinese are not the region’s only migrants. The Cham, for example, were once masters of their own country in what is now Vietnam. Since the 19th century they have lived as scattered migrant communities in Cambodia and Thailand, Malaysia and China - as well as in Europe and the United States.

Then there are (or were) the Nisei Japanese in the United States, the Burgers in Sri Lanka, the Viet Kieu of South California and the Cape Malays of South Africa - really, the list is just about endless.
