PAGES FROM THE BOOK OF DURROW

Dating from the 7th century CE, the oldest illuminated manuscript gospel book from the Celtic World

The Book of Durrow is a medieval illuminated manuscript gospel book in the Insular art style. It was probably created between 650 and 700 CE. The place of creation may have been Durrow Abbey in Ireland, or Lindisfarne in Northeast England, or indeed the Abbey of Iona in the Scottish Hebrides - historians have yet to agree. It is certain, however, that The Book of Durrow was lodged at Durrow Abbey by 916 CE. Today it is preserved in the library at Trinity College, Dublin.
